Characteristics
Very rustic and adaptable, it is a bushy shrub with abundant fruiting; this plant has leaves similar to those of the hawthorn and produces a very decorative flowering. The fruits are small spherical apples, depending on the variety, the color ranges from pale yellow to intense red. The flavor of the fleshy pulp is sweet and sour.
Fruiting period
Ripening occurs from the end of August and continues until the beginning of October. the fruits are preserved for a long time.
History
The area of origin of this plant is Central Asia Minor, on the island of Crete, although some ecotypes are native to the Mediterranean basin. In many Italian regions the azzeruolo plant is found naturalized in the spontaneous state, especially in Liguria, Emilia Romagna, Veneto, Tuscany, Lazio, Molise, Campania, Puglia and Sicily.
