Botanical naturalist, he obtained a PhD in "Biosystematics and plant ecology" at the University of Pisa. From 1998 to 2002 he held the research grant "Biosystematic and cytotaxonomic aspects of the flora of north-western Tuscany" at the Department of Science at the Museum of Natural History of the Mediterranean, as curator of the Botanical Garden, the Germplasm Bank and the naturalistic collections.
